Arnault.Ca Service Information
A few services run on this domain! Here is a description of each one.

Ejabberd - Jabber Chat Server
Ejabberd is a chat server that uses the XMPP/Jabber protocol (you can think of Jabber as the email of chat.) This is my preferred way to talk! If you'd like an account on my server, feel free to ask and I'll show you how to use it.
You can get it here, or you can try a more friendly server that is compatible with Jabber, called Snikket.
You can use one of the following apps to use an account on my server: Gajim (GNU/Linux, Windows), Conversations (Android), Monal (iOS, MacOS
Some notes about the configuration:
-
The server has federation disabled! You cannot message anyone who does not have @arnault.ca at the end of their Jabber ID. The server is mainly for my friend groups and family, and while spam is not much of a problem on the open Jabber network, I'd prefer to not give my less tech savy people any issues!
-
The maximum file upload size is about 1GB (998000000 bytes to be exact)
-
Files and Messages are stored on the server for 10 days. Most Jabber apps store messages locally, so you'll still have your chat history even if the server doesn't
-
It is strongly recommended to use OMEMO encryption to protect your messages and files! If you got help setting up Jabber from me, I've made sure that OMEMO is enabled by default. All the apps above support OMEMO encryption, and many of them have it on by default!
-
I have a naming convention for users on the server! If it is someone with the same surname as me, then it is firstname@arnault.ca. If it is someone who doesn't have the same surname as me, then it is flastname (first initial + last name; i.e. Jane Doe becomes jdoe@arnault.ca), or it is the username that the person asks for.
-
There is no automated password reset system. If you have forgotten your password, let me know through some other means or IRL. Consider using a password manager!
-
The server supports calls! Calling support in Jabber is something that is being worked on, but you can use any of the mentioned smartphone apps to make 1:1 calls

Apache Httpd - Web Server
Apache is a web server. You're using it right now!

Proton AG - Mail Provider
I am very much in favour of hosting things yourself, but I hate hosting email! It is the most spammed network on the Internet! I just pay Proton AG to do it.

Debian GNU/Linux - Operating System
As with all my computers, I prefer to use Debian GNU/Linux on my servers!
